With Justice For All
Reflection:
For this project, we started by studying Dr. Kings ideas of civil disobedience and his definition of what makes a just or unjust law. Then we studied various moral and political philosophies of justice that have influenced our legal system including Deontology, Utilitarianism, John Rawls’, and Libertarianism. After studying the philosophies, we researched various issues of injustice in Durango and heard from community organizations about the issues they are working on from homelessness, to immigration, to environmental issues. After researching these issues, as a class we voted on homelessness to dig deeper into. Throughout our research on homelessness we heard from community members and organizations such as, Axis, Food Not Bombs, Ed Aber, and the veteran homestead project. Our class went on a field trip to the camps up at test tracks. My project group also went up a few times separate from the field trip. Our final task for this project was to plan out and create an event where we can show our projects, inform people, provide a meal, and create an environment where everyone is on the same level and nobody is above or below anyone else.
We started off the event with a few guest speakers from our community talking about homelessness. After listening to the guest speakers people could walk around and check our different projects or go to the movie room to watch videos that students created. Finally families brought food to serve a meal to everyone, and after everyone finished eating and socializing we packed up. I think we did a good job at making everyone feel welcome and safe being there and that's a big part of what made the event so good.
Throughout creating our video I had to stretch and push myself out of my comfort zone in several ways and I know both Ari, and Ryan did also. For our project we had to go out into the community to get interviews. Initially it pushed me out of my comfort zone by introducing myself to strangers and asking them if they would mind me interviewing them. After talking to several people it became a lot easier for me and I felt more comfortable talking to people. Everyone in our group had to closely collaborate with each other throughout all the stages of the project. Whenever we were getting interviews we had a system worked out so everyone knew what they were supposed to be doing, we also spent a lot of time talking about the project and really figuring out what we wanted it to look like, and what we could do to make people get our message.
I really enjoyed this project and I feel like I have a lot to take away from it from different experiences I had working on the project and watching the video after we finished. This whole process has opened up my mind a lot more to homeless people and just people in general. I think that by going out and getting interviews and actually spending time talking to some of these people has really helped me to not judge people by their appearance and it has made me so much more comfortable approaching strangers. This experience was very memorable for me and it made me a better person than I was at the start.
